Empowering local communities

Hand in hand with our conservation goals, our foundation is deeply committed to social impact. The Kuzuko Private Game Reserve was founded with the expressed purpose of creating jobs in an area with exceptionally high unemployment. Later, our foundation was established to broaden and strengthen this mission through environmental education, youth empowerment, and providing support to local schools and communities. Keep reading to explore the projects that are bringing our vision to life.

Today, all of the foundation’s staff come from towns surrounding the reserve, and some even worked on the original farms from which the Kuzuko Private Game Reserve was created. Others, who have completed work experience through the foundation, are now fully trained employees.

We truly believe that “when you help one individual, you don’t just support them, but a whole family, a whole generation.” (Freddie, Social Outreach Officer)

Our social projects:

  • A central and ongoing focus of our foundation is supporting Bracefield, a local remote farm school located in the heart of rural Zuurberg.

Bracefield educates approximately 43 primary school children from nearby farms, yet, consistently overlooked by governmental support, it regularly lacks even the most essential resources such as food, clean water, and building maintenance.

This is where our foundation steps in.

On an ongoing basis, we provide assistance by supplying food, educational materials, and maintenance support for the school’s facilities, to ensure that it can continue to educate and house its students (of which approximately 15 board) when its budget inevitably runs out.

Beyond these practical needs, however, our social outreach officer also offers mentorship and guidance to the young students, particularly when it comes to helping the transition after graduation. Many of these young learners face great challenges when moving on to secondary school, as it is located in the nearest town, Somerset East, and results in many choosing to drop out rather than continuing their education. We aim to address this gap and empower the remote school students to pursue their education further - and uplift their futures.

Additionally, we support the dedicated teachers at Bracefield, who find themselves with extended responsibilities that span far beyond teaching, including caregiving, hostel matroning, and even cooking. We are committed to ensuring that both students and educators have the resources and support they need to thrive. Together, we want to build a stronger future for these children, where education opens doors to new possibilities.

"Despite our challenges and obstacles, we are extremely grateful and blessed to be a part of these children's daily lives. They are the reason we get to do what we love each and every day. A good education can change anyone. A good teacher can change everything" - Bracefield Teacher

  • Our mentorship programme, ‘Pathfinders’ is a key component of our mission to uplift and empower the young people in our local communities.

Each year, the foundation selects a group of young individuals from Somerset East - our nearest town - to participate in the programme, chosen based on their potential and the need for support and empowerment in their lives.

Within the programme, each mentee receives personalised guidance, practical life advice, career coaching, and day-to-day support. Freddie, our social outreach officer, leads this work and strives to enable, empower, and uplift these young people, covering topics from financial management and health to personal development.

Centrally, Freddie takes the time to understand each mentees unique circumstances and aspirations, which allows us to tailor our job-readiness support, to better facilitate their success and help them navigate a chart a clear path toward their desired future.

    Job Preparedness Training

Complementing the mentorship programme is our job-preparedness training, which focuses on both soft and practical skills that can expand access to employment opportunities. Sometimes, this is as simple - and as life-changing - as helping someone obtain their driver’s licence.

Our ultimate goal is to help these young people secure jobs in their desired fields, enabling them to grow independently and, in turn, inspire, guide, and uplift others in their communities.

“My ultimate goal is for my mentees to be able to do even more good than I can, and be able to inspire others.”

We are delighted that many of our mentees have gone on to become mentors and role models to others as they have progressed.

  • In 2025, we launched our first internship programme in partnership with Kuzuko Lodge, aimed at uplifting young people from the communities surrounding the reserve. This initiative has been a long-standing goal of the foundation, and we are proud to see it come to life.

Four young people were selected to join the rotational programme, which is tailored to each individual’s interests and long-term career aspirations. So far, our interns have gained hands-on experience across a variety of departments, including:

    • Front of house

    • Kitchen and restaurant

    • Spa

    • Reserve maintenance and conservation

    • Tracking and guiding

    • Lodge maintenance and worksho

    • Housekeeping

  • At Kuzuko Foundation, we firmly believe that education is essential for conservation. That's why we are dedicated to sharing environmental knowledge and the importance of conservation with as many young people as possible, with the hope of inspiring a deep appreciation for the natural world that surrounds them.

Each week, we conduct environmental awareness talks for children, youth, and young adults from local communities. These sessions are held in various locations to maximize our reach, but are primarily delivered at local schools, the Somerset East Museum—where we engage older youth—and our education centre at Hopewell, situated within the Kuzuko Private Game Reserve.

Through these talks, we aim to deepen young people's understanding of their environmental heritage and teach them how to coexist harmoniously with nature. Our topics also cover a range of issues, including habitat restoration, water conservation, and the importance of managing invasive species.

“We are all nature. Every one of us. There is no way in which we can separate ourselves from it.” - Fred, our social outreach manager.

  • Many unequal career opportunities stem from a lack of exposure and experience, and as a foundation, we aim to address both for as many local young people and adults we can reach. We also collaborate with other charities, and provide experience to individuals they refer to us.

For those interested in pursuing careers in conservation, guiding, hospitality, beauty and spa, mechanics, or maintenance, we are fortunate to be able to offer direct hands-on work experience within the game reserve and at Kuzuko Lodge.

Equally, linking with our mentorship programme, our mentees are either accommodated at Kuzuko or set up elsewhere (should alternative experience be more in keeping with their personal career goals).

Our ultimate goal is for these young people to be empowered and uplifted with the confidence, skills, and work experience from which they can build a sustainable career and secure meaningful employment.

  • Hopewell, situated within the non-dangerous game section of our reserve, serves as the base for our foundation and is home to our permanent education centre.

Here, we welcome children and young people from surrounding communities and charities to engage in hands-on learning about conservation and the environment.

Through these visits, we aim to instill a sense of stewardship in the next generation and inspire a deep appreciation for nature, so that they will protect it as they grow. We highlight:

    • Key species, including members of the Big Five found in the reserve

    • The work and purpose of habitat restoration efforts, including our recent spekboom reforestation project

    • The significance of native vegetation to the ecosystem

    • Examples of habitat management and ongoing conservation initiatives

    • The responsibilities of anti-poaching teams and rangers

    • Potential careers within the conservation sector

Freddie’s Story

Read below our social outreach officer’s story, and how his life was transformed by the help of a foundation.

“My ultimate goal is for those I help to be able to do even more good than I can, and inspire others” y

While working as a guide, however, Freddie continued to know that his ultimate goal was to find a way to help others with similar starts and give back to his community. As our foundation took shape, so did Freddie’s opportunity to use his personal experiences and passion for nature to inspire and mentor others from the local community.

Today, Freddie is our social outreach officer. He is the heartbeat of the foundation. As a member of the local community himself, Freddie is able to connect with everyone who he meets - but particularly importantly, the children and young people. He understands, firsthand, their economic and social challenges, and the experience of growing up without the support of a caring or present family. Freddie is living proof that change is possible - that hope is not futile, and that they are loved. (A word he had never been told throughout his youth.)

Just like the foundation that uplifted Freddie, our mission is to empower as many local young people as we can. His life was transformed when a hand was extended, and he took it. At Kuzuko Foundation, Freddie is who puts this in action. He noted, “when you transform the life of one child, you don’t just help them, but their whole family and generation”.

Like many of the children and young people we strive to empower and uplift, Freddie, our social outreach officer, started life without the support many of us take for granted. Following a difficult childhood, Freddie wanted to start working as soon as possible. Often, from when he was as young as 13, he would do odd jobs or skip school to work, just to be able to buy himself food.

Despite this, Freddie largely managed to maintain his education, and his life was changed when a foundation, similar to Kuzuko, advertised the chance for some young people from Somerset East to attend a hospitality school in Port Elizabeth. Encouraged by his teacher, Fred submitted an application, and it was accepted. At the hospitality school, Freddie excelled in his studies and was supported in his wish to pursue a course in conservation. His love for nature flourished, and he went on to become an exceptional Field Guide, which brought him to Kuzuko…

Hopewell Education Centre

Sharing our place of glory

Hopewell is situated within the Kuzuko Private Game Reserve, and is home to our foundation. Here we created our education centre, from which we host young people from the surrounding communities and enable them to learn about, and experience, the environment and its wildlife first-hand.

‘Kuzuko’, in Xhosa, translates to ‘place of glory’, and we would like to share the reserve with as many as we can. Our section, named Hopewell, is a fortuitous reflection of our mission — to be a bringer of hope. It is also shared with some of the reserve’s friendlier animal residents, including giraffes!

See below some quotes from those who have visited Hopewell. (Please note, all children’s names have been changed for their privacy and safety.)

"Thando (12) has been very encouraged by what he learned about tracking, and that it's something he can actually pursue and be good at. He now has a goal in life, he wants to work hard in school and has been adding subjects that will best support his conservation goal"

"None of these children had a clue that these careers existed, and were obtainable for them if they were willing to try. Honestly, this is absolutely life changing."

“The impact of just one day at Kuzuko on a child has proven far more profound than we could have imagined.”

"Thank you for opening doors for these children and ushering them towards a brighter future. You brought joy and hope and confidence to our children."
